Journalists across Pakistan have been protesting against the controversial amendments to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA). These amendments, which were recently passed by the Senate, have sparked widespread outrage among the media fraternity and opposition parties. The protests have taken place in major cities, including Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, and Peshawar.
The journalist community, along with civil society members, has raised concerns that the amendments aim to suppress press freedom and stifle freedom of expression. The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and other journalist bodies have been at the forefront of these protests, demanding the immediate repeal of the amendments.
The protests have seen journalists wearing chains as a symbol of their struggle against the amendments, and in past several journalists have been injured during clashes with the police. The media fraternity has also criticized the government for passing the amendments without consulting them or taking them into confidence.
