Ambassador Muhammad Sadiq Appointed as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Afghanistan Amidst Turbulent Times

Staff Report – In a significant move, the Government of Pakistan has appointed Ambassador (Retd) Muhammad Sadiq as the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Afghanistan, with the status of Minister of State. This appointment, effective from December 3, 2024, underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic relations and addressing key regional issues.

Ambassador Sadiq brings a wealth of experience to this role, having served in various high-profile positions throughout his distinguished career. He was previously Pakistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, where he played a crucial role in fostering bilateral relations and addressing security concerns. His tenure as Ambassador to Afghanistan from 2008 to 2014 further solidified his reputation as a dedicated and effective diplomat.

In addition to his diplomatic roles, Ambassador Sadiq has also served as the Secretary of the National Security Division and the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His extensive experience in international affairs, coupled with his educational background in Political Science, International Affairs, and Defence and Security Studies, makes him an ideal candidate for this critical position.

The appointment of Ambassador Sadiq comes at a time of heightened tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Relations between the two countries have been strained due to a series of cross-border attacks and retaliatory strikes. Pakistan has accused the Afghan Taliban of providing sanctuary to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a militant group responsible for numerous attacks on Pakistani soil. In response, Pakistan has conducted airstrikes targeting TTP hideouts in Afghanistan, leading to civilian casualties and further escalating tensions.

The appointment of Ambassador Sadiq is expected to enhance Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts in Afghanistan and contribute to regional stability and cooperation. His leadership and expertise will be instrumental in navigating the complex geopolitical landscape and fostering positive relations between the two neighboring countries.
