ISLAMABAD: The government has nominated PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari from the National Assembly and Senator Irfan Siddiqui from the Senate as members of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) under the newly enacted 26th Constitutional Amendment. From the opposition, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Omar Ayub Khan and Opposition Leader in the Senate Shibli Faraz have been nominated.
According to sources, the names of the government and opposition nominees will be sent to the Speaker of the National Assembly, and a notification of the appointments is expected to be issued today (Thursday). As per Article 175A, added after the 26th Constitutional Amendment, the JCP, headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan, will also consist of two senators and two Members of the National Assembly, including one senator and one MNA each from the government and opposition benches.
Meanwhile, the PPP has proposed the name of Farooq Naik for the JCP. According to PPP sources, the attorney general and law minister are already representing the PMLN government in the JCP, in line with the government’s promise of equal representation. Sources indicate that the PPP wants the JCP to include two PTI, two PPP, and two government (PMLN) members, including the law minister and the attorney general, to ensure equal representation.
